Pre-concert discussion with Mark Elder and Dr Martin Deasy, who is a specialist in Donizetti in Naples. Queen Elizabeth Hall auditorium.

"The Canadian Children's Opera Chorus was to pass a milestone in 1988: its twentieth anniversary.  It was decided that the best way to celebrate was to commission a work by a Canadian composer.  The choir offered the commission to

Harry Somers.  Somers had always enjoyed working with children, and he gladly accepted.  The heavenly collaboration resulted in

A Midwinter Night's Dream."

7. DON CARLO

Italian version,

Milan, 1884 (Duet)

Don Carlo, heir to the Spanish throne, is overjoyed with the return of his friend, Rodrigo, Marquess of Posa, from the wars in Flanders. The distraught Carlo proceeds to confide in Rodrigo that he is in love with his own stepmother, Elisabetta de Valois, the Queen of Spain. Rodrigo urges Carlo to forget Elisabetta and devote himself to the oppressed people of Flanders. In this stirring duet, the two swear eternal friendship.

Margison Sings Verdi

2003 Juno Award Nominee for Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral Performance

Performers: Richard Margison, James Westman

Composer: Verdi
Conductor: Richard Bradshaw
Release Date: March 2002
CD: SMCD 5213

“Joining Margison is conductor RICHARD BRADSHAW and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra. Along with a featured performance from the rising young baritone JAMES WESTMAN, this wonderful cast takes the listener on an emotional rollercoaster that is an artistic triumph. Margison performances shine whether as the love-struck lover Rodolfo in Luisa Miller or the tortured lover Alvaro in La forza del destino; or as the falsely-accused Jacopo Foscari from the opera I due foscari where Jacopo sings of his innocence. From Verdi's Don Carlo, James Westman as Rodrigo and Margison as Don Carlo sing a stirring duet swearing their eternal friendship. An absolute highlight is the very last track in the CD, as Margison performs the role of Manrico from Il Trovatore. It begins with the moving aria from Act III, Ah si, ben mio, coll'essere (Ah yes, my love, when I am yours), where Manrico sings of his love for Lenora, an idyllic scene soon shattered when news arrives of Manrico's mother being sentenced to death at the stake. In Di quella pira l'orrendo foco (The horrible blaze of that pyre) Margison, conductor and orchestra deliver an extraordinary finale sure to send thrills up the listeners' spine. “ CBC

Recorded Live: Roy Thompson Hall, Toronto, Ontario, December 31, 1999
CD: SMCD 5198

On Friday, December 31, 1999 at 7:00 p.m., Toronto, Ontario was home to one of the most historic events in Canadian music history: Roy Thomson Hall's Millennium Opera Gala. Although headlined by Canada's own "three tenors" - Ben Heppner, Richard Margison and Michael Schade - the impressive list of participants did not end there. Included on the roster were sopranos Tracy Dahl, Frances Ginzer and Adrianne Pieczonka; mezzo sopranos Catherine Robbin and Jean Stilwell; and baritones Russell Braun, Brett Polegato, and Gino Quilico. In addition to these current international stars, the next generation was also represented by four exceptionally gifted young singers: sopranos Isabel Bayrakdarian and Measha Brüggergosman; baritone James Westman; and the 18-year-old bass Robert Pomakov. These outstanding Canadian singers were complemented by Roy Thomson Hall's two resident companies, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir under the direction of Mario Bernardi and Richard Bradshaw. The two-and-a-half hour concert was broadcast live to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's RADIO TWO network on the concert programme IN PERFORMANCE. The critical and public response to both the concert and the broadcast was unprecedented. This new compact disc on CBC Records takes highlights from that broadcast.
